🔷 Mineral Wealth

  • Approximately 80% of India’s manganese production comes from Balaghat district, making it a significant player on the national mineral map.

  • The copper deposit at Malanjkhand is considered the largest in the country.

  • Other major minerals found in the district include bauxite, kyanite, marble, dolomite, limestone, and clay.

🏭 Industry and Employment

  • Projects like the Malanjkhand Copper Project (MCP) contribute to the industrial identity of the district.

  • Apart from mining, agro-based small industries, woodcraft, and handicrafts also play a role in the local economy.

🏞️ Challenges to Development

  • In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj listed Balaghat among the 250 most backward districts of India.

  • It is one of the 24 districts in Madhya Pradesh currently receiving special financial aid under the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
