Hatta Ki Bawdi: A Historical Wonder

Located in Hatta village, Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh, Hatta Ki Bawdi is a historic stepwell built by Gond King Hate Singh Valke. It is believed that the village Hatta was named after King Hate Singh. The stepwell was constructed for soldiers to take refuge, access drinking water, bathe, and rest during the summer months.

Historical Significance of the Stepwell

Hatta Ki Bawdi was built during the 17th-18th century using massive rock-cut structures. It is a two-story structure with 10 pillars on the upper floor and 8 pillars supporting the lower chambers and verandas. The entrance of the stepwell features intricate carvings of four-armed Lord Shiva and Goddess Ambika.

Influence of Gond, Maratha, and Bhonsle Dynasties

After the reign of the Gond kings, the stepwell was also used during the Maratha and Bhonsle rule. Due to this, one can see architectural influences from these periods. It is believed that a secret tunnel inside the stepwell once connected Lanji Fort and Mandla Fort, although it is now closed.

Preservation and Tourism Significance

Currently, this historic stepwell is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Its beautiful carvings, architectural brilliance, and historical significance make it an important attraction for tourists and history enthusiasts.
