Kanha National Park: The Wildlife Paradise of Balaghat
Spread across the Balaghat and Mandla districts of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park is one of India’s premier wildlife sanctuaries. Known for its lush greenery, rich biodiversity, and the famous Barasingha, this park attracts nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world.
History and Establishment
Kanha National Park was established in 1955 and later included under Project Tiger in 1973. Covering an area of 940 square kilometers, this national park is home to tigers, leopards, elephants, gaurs, wild dogs, and numerous bird species. It is renowned for its vast grasslands, dense sal and bamboo forests, and serene water bodies.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
This national park is famous for its diverse wildlife. The major attraction here is the ‘Barasingha,’ also known as the “Jewel of Kanha.” Apart from this, tigers, leopards, jackals, sloth bears, wild boars, deer, and nilgai can also be spotted. Bird lovers can enjoy watching over 300 species of birds that inhabit the park.
Tourism and Safari Experience
Kanha National Park offers Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari for visitors. The park is divided into three major tourism zones:
- Kisli Zone – Known for high tiger sightings.
- Mukki Zone – Famous for gaurs and other wildlife species.
- Sarhi Zone – A special attraction for bird watchers.
The best time to enjoy a safari is during sunrise and sunset when the wildlife is most active.

Best Time to Visit
Kanha National Park is open to visitors from October to June. The best time to spot tigers is between March and May. The park remains closed during the monsoon season (July to September).

By Train
